What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is an FDA-cleared medical device that has been widely used since 2009. It was the first non-invasive device approved in our country to lift tissue on the neck, lower face, and brow. The system, developed by Ulthera, Inc., tightens tissue using focused ultrasound energy. More than targeting the skin with this powerful collagen-stimulator, the Ultherapy device determines the precise depth of tissue at which ultrasound waves will have the greatest impact. This is identified by using ultrasound the way most people know, as a visual tool. Ultrasound imaging shows the trained provider the depth of connective tissue to be tightened. The device is then adjusted to deliver ultrasound waves to that layer to stimulate ongoing collagen proliferation and tissue remodeling.
Is Ultherapy safe?
Ultrasound waves have been used for decades in medicine. The Ultherapy device has been manufactured with that same energy. While treatment must be performed by a trained, qualified provider to avoid unwanted side effects like prolonged redness, Ultherapy is generally considered safe. The device delivers ultrasound waves through the top layer of the skin to target the cells that make new collagen. Device settings control how much energy is absorbed and at what depth. There are no punctures or incisions, no chemicals, and no products to induce skin reactions.
Who is a good candidate for this procedure?
Ultherapy can be an excellent treatment for the adult whose skin has become loose and saggy, who has jowls, thin neck skin, or a lowered eyebrow line. These are all signs that the body is using more collagen than it is making. Ultherapy patients range in age from 30 years old to 70+ years. What these patients have in common is an interest in addressing the signs of aging without surgery. The power of ultrasound has proven effective on mild to moderate tissue laxity. While there may be cases in which too much tissue firmness and elasticity has been lost to achieve dramatic results with any nonsurgical method, Ultherapy has been successfully rejuvenating faces for several years.
To determine if you are a good candidate for Ultherapy, we will conduct a thorough consultation during which we get to know your concerns and what you wish to achieve with nonsurgical treatment. Your skin will be evaluated to identify the extent of laxity and thinning that have occurred. Your provider will then explain how Ultherapy works, how it may help you, and what you can expect from treatment.
Ultherapy is a leading non-surgical facelift procedure that is popular among all age groups. Though it is a non-surgical approach to anti-aging, it can also be performed as a touch-up for a person who has already had a facelift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery.
Are there any side effects of Ultherapy?
The penetration of ultrasound waves into the deeper layers of the skin causes heat to accumulate near the dermis. This can cause temporary redness. This side effect typically resolves within a few hours of treatment. Ultherapy may also activate nerves in the treatment area, causing tingling or tenderness that lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Some patients also feel like they look slightly swollen. If swelling occurs, it gradually decreases over several days.
What does the treatment feel like?
Ultherapy treatments are performed in the office in a comfortable reclining chair or while the patient lies on a padded treatment table. No anesthesia is necessary. Smaller treatment areas may be done in approximately 30 minutes. Larger treatment areas such as a face-and-neck combo may require a full 90 minutes.
During the Ultherapy procedure, patients may experience an odd prickling sensation. Some patients report feeling warmth build up in the skin. These sensations may be more intense in some areas than others. Sensations are usually more noticeable in areas where the skin is thinner, such as the forehead or jawline. While heat or prickling can be heightened at times, most patients tolerate the Ultherapy process just fine.
The treatment area can sometimes feel sore after the Ultherapy treatment has ended. This is due to heat absorption and the stimulation of fibroblast cells, the cells that make collagen. Aftercare instructions may include avoiding spas and hot tubs for a short time and using over-the-counter medication to manage comfort if necessary.
How long do Ultherapy results last?
The results from Ultherapy® last two to three years. The treatment works by stimulating the generation of new collagen in the dermis. This remodels the foundation that supports smooth, firm, youthful skin. Because collagen production slows over time, the results of Ultherapy will eventually begin to decrease. Using good sun care that includes broad-spectrum sunscreen, limiting alcohol consumption, and applying quality skincare products all work to maintain the effects of collagen stimulation for a longer period.
How many treatments are needed for optimal results?
Nearly all of our Ultherapy clients achieve profound results with just one treatment. Because ultrasound energy works by triggering the production of healthy new collagen, the process may look different for every person. In some cases, a follow-up treatment may be needed to boost collagen to sufficient levels. This is usually performed no sooner than one year after the initial treatment. It is at that time when the active collagen-growth phase has declined.
