It’s a shock for many adults – especially women – when they learn acne isn’t just for teens. For grown-up sufferers, it can be embarrassing and annoying, not to mention painful! Enter photodynamic therapy, an effective solution to attaining clearer skin, especially when the treatment is administered by Terry Conrad APRN, who has used this technique on thousands of her clients in her Cos Cob, CT practice, Naturallyou.
The appeal of this effective treatment is that no surgery or daily medication is required, and recovery begins immediately after the treatment ends.
What Is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?
A light-activated system, PDT destroys abnormal cells and disrupts the function of overactive sebaceous glands, the root cause of acne.
It is a two-step process that works this way:
- First, we apply a topical solution, Levulan, to the treatment area. Target cells absorb this photosensitizer to prime them for the light-based treatment.
- Next, the patented BLU-U® blue light activates the Levulan, which destroys the acne cells and shrinks and disables the sebaceous gland that produces excess skin oils.
The final result is clearer, smoother skin, reduced oil production, and refined pores.

PDT Helps Acne
PDT is often used when other acne treatments have failed or failed to produce substantial improvement. It is often used in combination with prescription medication. PDT kills the acne bacteria, in addition to reducing the size and activity of sebaceous glands. PDT also helps restore the skin’s integrity resulting in the overall improvement of the acne condition.
PDT Helps Actinic Keratoses (AK)
AK is a rough, dry, scaly patch that forms when skin is damaged by ultraviolet sun rays or indoor tanning beds. The scalp is especially vulnerable, especially in balding men. Sufferers usually have more than one area of AK on their skin. PDT is an effective treatment for minimally to moderately thick AKs on the face or scalp.
Some treatment benefits include:
- 75%-100% clearance of AKs in the majority of patients
- Good to excellent cosmetic response.
- No surgery or medication.
- Recovery that begins immediately after the treatment ends.
- No downtime.
